Sight-Restoring Care, With Dignity

Founder’s Vision

From crisis to calling

Founder: Subramoney “Vanny” Joganna (CJ Memorial Eye Foundation established 23 Aug 2022).

My name is Vanny Joganna. I’ve lived with eye complications since birth. In October 1975, I experienced sudden, total blindness. Though my vision partially returned within hours, no diagnosis could explain what had happened—even after thorough examinations and scans.

This life-altering episode led me to seek care and knowledge around the world. I became a regular outpatient at leading centres in Chennai and Coimbatore, India—where I met inspiring clinicians and researchers. Over the years, with support from clients and friends in South Africa, I helped fund more than 1,000 surgeries in India—giving hope and new vision to people in need.

Today, that experience is focused on South Africa. CJ Memorial Eye Foundation partners with accredited private hospitals and certified ophthalmologists to deliver cataract and cornea surgeries at no cost to patients who cannot afford private care. We aim to restore sight with dignity, transparency, and proven clinical excellence.

“In 1975 I lost my sight in an instant. Since then, I’ve dedicated my life to helping others regain theirs.”
— Subramoney “Vanny” Joganna

Why this matters

The scale of avoidable blindness in South Africa

Hundreds of thousands live with treatable visual impairment; cataracts affect a large share. Public hospitals are overextended; private care is excellent but unaffordable for many. A typical private-facility cataract pathway—covering theatre, specialist nursing, surgeon, and ancillaries—averages around R25,000 per eye and is usually a day procedure. CJMEF exists to bridge that gap through negotiated rates and targeted funding.

Impact > Our global roots

What we learned in India—and why it matters here

Community eye care in India demonstrated what becomes possible when dignity, accessibility, and scale work together. High-volume cataract and cornea surgery models emerged in the late 1970s, beginning in Coimbatore and growing into a national network that restored sight for millions. A defining element of this approach is the cross-subsidy model, where paid treatment supports free surgeries—allowing those who cannot afford care to receive it without compromise in quality.

This “80:20” model has become widely recognised for expanding access to the poorest communities while remaining financially sustainable. Over decades, it has enabled a system where sight can be restored efficiently, compassionately, and at scale.

These principles helped shape our founder’s understanding of what community eye care could look like in South Africa: outcomes-driven, people-centred, and grounded in respect. CJMEF is an independent South African non-profit and does not hold any current affiliation with organisations in India; we simply acknowledge the influence that successful models abroad had on our belief that restoring sight should be within reach for everyone.
